Miniature Donkies
SpacerThere is nothing more precious than the sight of a little miniature donkey baby. With their long ears, little nose and squeaky honk, they are undoubtedly one of the most treasured pets on the farm. The miniature donkey comes in a variety of sizes and colors. The miniature must mature to be 36" tall or less. As with any other livestock, the miniature donkey must be proportional, depending upon their individual size and bone structure. They should also be well balanced and correct, and free of any physical abnormalities. The most common color is the original gray-dun. With selective breeding, more exotic colors have been developed, such as: chocolate, black, white pink, sorrel, and spotted, all of which have the distinguishable cross at the withers.

If you are just wanting a pet, the miniature donkey only requires a backyard, and if you are wanting to go into a breeding program, only one to two acres. Donkeys can be kept in any type of fencing, a single strand of electric wire will hold them. They must have a shelter to get in from the weather; this can be as simple as a three-sided shed.

The miniature donkey feed program is very simple. If they do not have good pasture, they will need sweet feed, a good quality grass hay, and always fresh water daily. The non-routine care of the miniature involves feet trimming, minerals and vaccinations. If you are keeping your donkeys on pasture, they need their feet trimmed two times a year. If they are kept inside, they need trimmed every three months, and if you are showing them, they need trimmed every four weeks. All of our foals are trimmed at two weeks of age. We provide our donkeys with trace mineral salt at all times. The vaccinations we give are as follows: Eastern and Western Encephalitis, Venezuelan Encephalitis, Flu-Vac, and Pneulabort K+1B.

The female donkey is ready to breed at two years of age, and the males can settle a few at two years old, but need to be three years old to settle a herd. The gestation period of the miniature is 365 days. Babies can be weaned at three months.

Breeders as well as the private sector have made room on their farms as well as in their hearts for these lucrative and wonderfully affectionate little animals.
